WINDER: A 14-year-old student opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing four people and injuring nine others on Wednesday. The victims, identified as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, were shot as students scrambled for safety.

Authorities said the gunman, a student at the school, surrendered to officers shortly after the attack. He was armed with an assault-style rifle and is being charged as an adult. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed that the teen had been interviewed in 2023 after anonymous tips to the FBI indicated threats of a school shooting, though no action was taken at the time.

Panic gripped the campus as students barricaded classrooms while waiting for the all-clear. Sophomore Kaylee Abner described hiding behind her teacher’s desk, holding a classmate’s hand in fear as gunshots echoed through the school. Some teachers used their clothing to aid the injured until emergency responders arrived.

Authorities are investigating how the teen acquired the weapon. Barrow County schools will remain closed for the rest of the week as the investigation continues, with grief counseling offered to students.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and local officials expressed their sorrow, while Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the urgent need to address gun violence in schools.

A candlelight vigil in downtown Winder drew hundreds, including parents, students, and community members, mourning the tragic loss. “It’s outrageous that parents live in fear for their children’s safety at school,” one attendee said.

This tragedy is part of a growing wave of school shootings across the U.S., reigniting the debate on gun control and school safety measures.
